UPject Reporter 1.0 Documentation

The UPject Reporter program is a simple program which automatically sends your computer uptime statistics to two Uptime Projects. Currently, it sends data to Hosting Wired Uptime Project (formerly Wonko's Uptime Project); and PHreeK.

This documentation, as with most other documentations, is in FAQ form.

  1. Q: What data is sent to the projects about my computer?
A: Several pieces of information about your computer are submitted. In UPject Computer 2.0, there will be privacy options so you can limit what data is being sent. Currently, the following data is sent:
    • How long your computer has been running (uptime)
    • Your processor type (Pentium III, Pentium IV, etc.)
    • Percentage of CPU usage
    • The fact that you use the UPject Reporter client.

  2. Q: What do I need to submit data to these services?
A: First, you need an account. Click on the links above to visit the web sites and register for an account and a host. Upon adding a host, you will be provided with the information needed for the client. For Hosting Wired, you are given a complex authorization key, we recommend you copy and paste. For PHreeK, you will need to give UPject your user name, password, and host ID. You enter these values by clicking on the "Settings" button next to the check box in the groups.

  3. Q: How can I update UPject Reporter?
A: UPject Reporter currently does not have built-in auto-update features, as it will not be supported for very long. It will be merged with another project idea, UPject Computer, and the release name will be UPject Computer 2.0. In the meantime, please click on the "Manual Update" button in the side bar to update your version of UPject Reporter. Hopefully our first update will be the automatic update feature.

  4. Q: For some reason, my Hosting Wired account does not update. What should I do?
A: You may be behind a firewall which does not allow outbound UDP packets to be broadcasted. To circumvent this, click on "Settings" next to the Hosting Wired check box, and then check the box "Firewall" and click "OK." Any future updates will update your Hosting Wired account using the HTTP protocol. PHreeK users will not encounter such a problem, as the default method of update is HTTP.

  5. Q: Does UPject start up automatically with my computer?
A: That depends. If you are running an NT based system (Windows NT, 2000, XP); and if you choose to install UPject as a service, it will automatically start on your next reboot. However, the service will not automatically start after the first install, as configuration using the UPject GUI is needed.

If you are NOT using an NT based system (95, 98, 98SE, ME); you will need to start the UPject client manually by opening it from the start menu.

  6. Q: How can I stop updating if I am running UPject as a service?
A: You can stop updating your uptime statistics by clicking on "Start," "All Programs" or "Programs," and then find where you located UPject Reporter. Underneath this, there is a folder called "Service." Hover your mouse over "Service," and then click "Stop Service" once the menu appears.

  7. Q: How can I start updating if I am running UPject as a service?
A: There are two ways you can do this. One way is to do the same as in number 6, only clicking on "Start Service" instead of "Stop Service." Also, you can open the UPject Reporter GUI and click on "Start," and it will start your service. We do NOT recommend that you disable reporting, though, as it may effect your uptime statistics.

  8. Q: I am running a non-NT based system. Is it possible to stop reporting?
A: Yes and no. Exit out of the program and confirm that you want to exit; and you're reporting will stop. However, there is currently no way to stop reporting without closing out of the program. Stopping reporting is not necessary if you just want to change settings.

  9. Q: Do I have to do anything to log a reboot?
A: No. The uptime service will automatically detect reboots by seeing whenever your uptime resets back to zero.
  10. Q: I am running a non-NT based system. How can I automatically start reporting when I open the GUI?
A: Check the box "Automatically start on startup" next to the Start button in the GUI. From now on, whenever you open the GUI, it will automatically start reporting. NT users who are running UPject as a service do not need to check this box. In a future update, this check box will be disabled for NT users running a service.
